How Long Do Edibles Stay in Your System? Montana Drug Test & DUI Guide

How long do edibles stay in your system? For most occasional consumers, THC from a single edible shows up in urine for about 3 to 14 days, in blood for less than a day, and in saliva for roughly 24 hours. Regular and daily consumers can test positive in urine for a month or longer. In Montana, that timeline matters for more than workplace tests: it intersects with the state’s 5 ng/mL THC driving limit, implied consent testing, possession limits, and the rules every visitor needs to know before heading to Yellowstone or Glacier.
This is the Frosteez guide to edibles and drug testing for Montana residents and visitors. It covers detection times for urine, blood, saliva, and hair tests, why edibles test differently than smoking, and exactly what current Montana law says, with every statute linked to the official 2025 Montana Code Annotated.

Edibles are one of the most popular ways to enjoy cannabis in Montana, and one of the most misunderstood. The high takes longer to arrive, lasts longer once it does, and leaves a longer trail on drug tests than most people expect. Add Montana’s specific laws on THC and driving, workplace testing, and federal land, and it is easy to get caught off guard.
This guide breaks it all down so you can enjoy edibles from Frosteez Cannabis Company with confidence. For flower, vapes, and dabs, see our broader guide on how long THC stays in your system.
How Long Do Edibles Stay in Your System? Detection Times by Test
Here is the quick answer. These ranges are estimates drawn from controlled research and lab summaries. Your actual window depends on how often you consume, how much THC you take, your body composition, and the cutoff level the testing lab uses.
| Test | What It Detects | Occasional Use | Regular or Daily Use | Where It’s Used in Montana |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Urine | THC-COOH (inactive metabolite) | About 3 to 14 days | 2 to 6 weeks, sometimes longer | Employment, probation, treatment court |
| Blood | Active THC and 11-OH-THC | Usually under 24 hours | Several days, occasionally a week or more | DUI investigations, hospitals |
| Saliva | Active THC in the mouth | Up to about 24 hours | Up to about 72 hours | DUI testing, some workplaces |
| Hair | THC-COOH in the hair shaft | Often not detected after one edible | Up to about 90 days | Some employers, legal cases |

Why Edibles Test Differently Than Smoking
When you smoke or vape cannabis, THC passes through your lungs straight into your bloodstream. When you eat an edible, THC travels through your stomach and small intestine, then goes to your liver before it reaches the rest of your body. Your liver converts a large share of that THC into 11-hydroxy-THC, a potent active metabolite that explains why edibles often feel stronger and last longer.
Your body then breaks 11-hydroxy-THC down into THC-COOH, an inactive metabolite. THC-COOH is what standard urine tests look for. It is also the compound Montana’s DUI law specifically excludes, which is why a positive urine test and a DUI blood result are two very different things.
That liver pathway has a real effect on test results. In controlled research from Johns Hopkins, a brownie containing 25 mg of THC produced a roughly 10-fold higher peak THC-COOH level in urine than the same dose inhaled through a vaporizer, along with a longer time until the last positive test. A separate study of infrequent users found that, using federal workplace cutoffs, urine samples tested positive after 97.6% of edible sessions versus 59.5% of vaped sessions.
THC is also fat-soluble. Some of it moves into your body fat and slowly leaks back into your bloodstream over time. For regular consumers, that stored THC builds up, which is why detection windows stretch from days into weeks.
How Long an Edible High Lasts vs. How Long It Is Detectable
Feeling sober and testing negative are two very different things. Here is the typical timeline after a single edible:
Depends on what you have eaten and your metabolism. This delay is why so many people take a second dose too early. Wait at least 2 hours before deciding whether to take more.
The strongest effects usually arrive a few hours after eating, often after you have already decided you feel fine. Plan your evening, and your ride, around the peak, not the first hour.
Main effects typically last 4 to 8 hours. Some people feel residual grogginess for 12 hours or more, especially at higher doses or on an empty stomach.
Urine tests keep detecting THC metabolites for days after every effect is gone, and for weeks in regular consumers. Feeling normal does not mean testing negative.
In a controlled study of healthy adults eating THC brownies, blood THC peaked about 1.5 to 2 hours after eating and typically returned to baseline within 8 hours. Urine metabolite levels, on the other hand, peaked 6 to 9 hours after eating and kept showing up well after that.
Blood Tests and Montana DUI: Hours to Days
Blood tests measure active THC, which is what Montana’s 5 ng/mL DUI limit is based on. For occasional consumers, the blood window after an edible is short.
In a Johns Hopkins study of 10, 25, and 50 mg THC brownies, average peak whole-blood THC levels were just 1, 3.5, and 3.3 ng/mL, and THC was detectable for anywhere from 0 to 22 hours. Blood levels after eating cannabis are much lower than after smoking.
Do not read those numbers as permission to drive. Three things matter under Montana law:
- Impairment is its own offense. Montana can charge DUI based on how you are driving and behaving, at any THC level. Edibles peak hours after you eat them.
- Regular consumers carry more. Because THC builds up in body fat, frequent users can carry measurable active THC in their blood for several days after their last use.
- Under 21 means zero. Any detectable active THC is a DUI for drivers under 21.
There is no safe number of hours to wait that works for everyone. The simple rule: if you eat an edible, plan a sober ride for the rest of the day.
Saliva Tests in Montana: Up to 1 to 3 Days
Saliva (oral fluid) tests detect THC in your mouth. With edibles, research shows that saliva results mostly reflect THC residue left in the mouth from chewing, not the amount circulating in your blood. In the Johns Hopkins brownie study, THC showed up in oral fluid for roughly 2 to 22 hours.
Occasional consumers usually clear a saliva test within about a day. Frequent consumers may test positive for up to about 72 hours. This matters more in Montana now: after the 2025 Legislature passed House Bill 467, Montana’s implied consent law covers oral fluid testing alongside blood and breath.
Urine Tests and Montana Workplace Testing: 3 to 30+ Days
Urine testing is the standard for pre-employment screening, random workplace testing, and probation. These tests screen for THC-COOH, usually with an initial cutoff of 50 ng/mL and a confirmation cutoff of 15 ng/mL under federal workplace guidelines.
How long an edible shows up in urine depends mostly on how often you consume. Based on a lab review of controlled oral THC studies, typical urine windows look like this:
| How Often You Consume Edibles | Estimated Urine Detection |
|---|---|
| Single edible, infrequent consumer | About 3 to 14 days |
| Weekly | About 1 to 3 weeks |
| Daily | About 2 to 6 weeks |
| Multiple times per day | 6 weeks or longer in some cases |
What Montana Law Says About Testing Positive at Work
Montana gives legal cannabis consumers some workplace protection, but it has real limits:
- Marijuana is a “lawful product.” Montana’s Lawful Products Act (MCA 39-2-313) lists marijuana alongside food, alcohol, and tobacco, which generally protects legal, off-duty use.
- The exceptions are broad. Employers can still act when use affects job performance or co-worker safety, when it conflicts with a bona fide occupational requirement, or when they are following an established substance abuse policy or collective bargaining agreement.
- No on-the-job accommodation. Under MCA 16-12-108, employers do not have to accommodate cannabis use at work and can discipline employees who violate a drug policy or work while intoxicated.
- Federal rules still apply. Federal employees, DOT-regulated drivers, and many federal contractors are tested under federal standards no matter what Montana allows.
The practical takeaway: read your employer’s written drug policy. If you work a safety-sensitive or federally regulated job in Montana, treat any THC as off-limits.
What about gas station THC gummies? Hemp-derived delta-8 and delta-9 gummies produce the same THC-COOH metabolite as dispensary edibles and will trigger a positive urine test just the same. Since Montana’s new hemp regulations took effect in 2026, those products can no longer be sold at convenience stores or gas stations. Licensed dispensary edibles are the only ones lab-tested for accurate THC content, so you actually know what you are taking.
Hair Tests: Up to 90 Days
Hair tests look back roughly 90 days, based on the standard 1.5 inch sample taken close to the scalp. They are better at identifying repeated use than a single session, because only small amounts of THC-COOH make it into the hair shaft. One low-dose edible often will not register, while regular use over weeks usually will.
Visiting Montana? What to Know Before You Eat an Edible
Adults 21 and older can buy and consume cannabis in Montana with a valid government-issued photo ID. But a road trip through Big Sky Country crosses plenty of places where Montana’s cannabis law does not apply. Our Montana Cannabis Visitor Guide maps Frosteez locations along every major route. Here is what to keep in mind:
Cannabis is prohibited on all federal lands and waters, including Yellowstone, Glacier, national forests, and BLM land. Leave your edibles at your lodging outside the park.
Montana’s reservations, including the Crow Reservation south of Billings, Fort Peck near Plentywood, Blackfeet next to Glacier, and Flathead north of Missoula, set their own laws. Check tribal rules before bringing cannabis onto reservation land.
Montana law lets property owners and managers ban cannabis consumption on property they control. Many hotels, vacation rentals, and rental cars do. Ask before you book.
Taking cannabis out of Montana is illegal, whether you are heading into Wyoming, Idaho, North Dakota, South Dakota, or Canada. Finish your edibles before you leave, or leave them behind.
A late-night edible can still affect you the next morning. If you have a long drive ahead, eat early, eat low, and give yourself a full night before getting behind the wheel.
Buying legally in Montana does not change your employer’s drug policy. If you will face a urine test after your trip, a single edible can show up for up to two weeks.
What Affects How Long Edibles Stay in Your System
- Frequency of use: The single biggest factor. Regular consumption builds up THC stores in body fat.
- Dose: Higher doses produce higher metabolite levels and longer detection windows. A single 5 mg Montana serving clears faster than a 50 mg session.
- Body fat: THC is stored in fat tissue, so people with more body fat may release metabolites over a longer period.
- Metabolism and age: Faster metabolisms process THC more quickly. Metabolism tends to slow with age.
- Test type and cutoff: A urine test with a 20 ng/mL cutoff will catch use for longer than one set at 50 ng/mL.
- Product type: Full-spectrum CBD products can contain trace THC that may add up with regular use.
Detox Myths: What Does Not Work
There is no proven way to flush THC from your system faster. Here is what the evidence shows about common claims:
Dilutes urine but does not speed up elimination. Many labs flag diluted samples, which can be treated as a failed test.
Can temporarily raise blood THC levels as fat stores release THC. Intense workouts right before a test may backfire.
Controlled research found no meaningful acceleration of cannabinoid clearance from skipping meals.
No reliable evidence they speed up THC clearance. Some just dilute or mask urine, and labs test for both.
The only reliable approach is time. If you know a test is coming, the most effective steps are stopping use early and keeping doses low.
Smart Edible Habits for Montana Consumers
- Start with one 5 mg serving. Montana’s serving cap makes low-dose consumption simple. Our Montana edibles dosage guide covers what to expect at each dose.
- Stay under 800 mg. That is the most THC in edibles you can legally possess at one time in Montana.
- Keep packages sealed in the car. Store them in the trunk or a locked glove box until you reach your destination. All Frosteez purchases leave in a state-required child-resistant exit bag.
- Space out your sessions. Frequency drives detection more than anything else. Occasional use keeps your window short.
- Know which test you are facing. A saliva screen and a urine test have very different windows.
- Medical patients: Talk to your provider and review your employer’s policy before a scheduled test.

Montana Edibles and Drug Testing FAQ
How long do edibles stay in your system for a urine test? For a single edible in an occasional consumer, THC metabolites usually show up in urine for about 3 to 14 days. Weekly consumers may test positive for 1 to 3 weeks, and daily consumers for 2 to 6 weeks or longer.
What is the THC limit for driving in Montana? Montana law makes it a DUI to drive with 5 ng/mL or more of active THC in your blood or other bodily substance. Inactive metabolites do not count toward that limit. Drivers under 21 can be charged with any detectable amount of active THC, and any driver can be charged based on impairment at any level.
How long after an edible can you drive in Montana? There is no set waiting period. Edible effects can peak 2 to 4 hours after eating and last 8 hours or more, and you can be charged with DUI based on impairment regardless of your THC level. The safest choice is to avoid driving for the rest of the day after eating an edible.
Can you refuse a THC test in Montana? You can refuse, but Montana’s implied consent law covers blood, breath, and oral fluid tests. A first refusal brings a 6-month license suspension and a second refusal within 5 years brings a 1-year suspension, with no restricted license in either case.
Can a Montana employer fire you for testing positive for THC from edibles? It depends on the job and the policy. Montana’s Lawful Products Act includes marijuana, but employers can still act under an established substance abuse policy, when use affects job performance or safety, or when federal rules apply. Employers also do not have to accommodate use at work.
How many edibles can you legally carry in Montana? Adults 21 and older can possess up to 800 mg of THC in edibles. In a vehicle, keep dispensary packages unopened and stored in the trunk, a locked glove box, a truck bed, or behind the last upright seat.
Can you bring edibles into Yellowstone or Glacier National Park? No. Cannabis is illegal under federal law on all federal lands and waters, including national parks, national forests, and BLM land, even though it is legal in the rest of Montana.
Can you take Montana edibles home to another state? No. Montana prohibits taking marijuana or marijuana products across state lines, including medical marijuana. Finish your edibles before leaving Montana or leave them behind.
Will one 5 mg Montana gummy show up on a drug test? It can. Research shows edibles produce higher urine metabolite levels than inhaled cannabis at the same dose. A single 5 mg gummy is more likely to clear quickly than a larger dose, but a sensitive urine test could still detect it for several days.
Do edibles stay in your system longer than smoking? Often, yes, at least in urine. Because your liver processes edible THC first, edibles tend to produce higher THC-COOH levels in urine and a longer time to the last positive test than the same dose smoked or vaped. Frequency of use still matters more than the method.
