History of Sidney Montana
Sidney is a city in eastern Montana near the North Dakota border and along the Yellowstone River. It is the county seat of Richland County and is often called Montana’s “Sunrise City.”
Early Settlement
Settlers began arriving in the Sidney area during the 1870s. The fertile land near the Yellowstone River attracted ranchers and farmers. A post office was established in 1888, which marked the formal beginning of the town.
How Sidney Got Its Name
According to local history, the town was named after a six-year-old boy named Sidney Walters. His family was staying with local justice of the peace Hiram Otis. When Otis prepared paperwork for the new post office, he chose the name “Sidney” after the boy. (Sidney Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture)
Incorporation and County Development
Sidney officially incorporated as a town in 1911. At that time, the population was only a few hundred residents. In 1914, Richland County was created from part of Dawson County, and Sidney became the county seat.
Agriculture and Irrigation
Agriculture became the backbone of the local economy after the completion of the Lower Yellowstone Irrigation Project in 1909. This major irrigation system helped transform the dry plains into productive farmland. Farmers in the region grew wheat, sugar beets, and other crops.
Sugar Beet Industry
A major economic boost came in 1924 when the Holly Sugar Corporation opened a sugar refinery in Sidney. The sugar beet industry became one of the town’s largest employers for decades and played a major role in the local economy.
Oil Boom Periods
Sidney experienced major oil booms during the late 1970s and early 1980s, and again in the early 2000s with development connected to the Bakken oil fields. These booms brought rapid population growth, new businesses, and infrastructure expansion.
Culture and Community
